What Is Chicory Root Inulin? The Prebiotic Fiber Explained
Inulin is one of the best-known prebiotic fibers, and it is the largest ingredient in Soda Lean at 211 mg per capsule.
What It Is
Inulin is a soluble fiber made of chains of fructose units. Chicory root (Cichorium intybus) is a rich commercial source. Smaller amounts are in onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus and bananas.
Why It Is Called A Prebiotic
Human enzymes cannot digest inulin, so it reaches the large intestine, where bifidobacteria and other gut bacteria ferment it. A prebiotic is food for helpful bacteria, not for you. Read the inulin guide.
How People Use It
Inulin appears in fiber supplements and fortified foods. Because it adds soluble fiber, it is a familiar part of appetite and digestion routines.*
Things To Know
- It can cause gas or bloating, especially at first
- People who react to FODMAPs often notice it more
- Chicory is in the daisy family, so allergies to related plants matter
- Water helps fiber work well
